Last Summer
Published in Hardcover by Kensington Pub Corp (August, 2003)
Average review score:

Read This Book Now!Coincidentally, I'm on vacation in Provincetown and picked this novel up the minute I saw it in the bookstore window. I spent all day reading it because I couldn't put it down. Never have I encountered such an enjoyable and unforgettable cast of characters, and never have I read a novel that could be laugh-out-loud funny one minute, reach-for-the-tissues poignant the next, and steam-up-the-windows sexy right after that. This book is so much fun I want to read it all over again immediately. Ford is an amazingly talented writer, and this book is THE summer read.
The Next TALES OF THE CITY!Finally, finally, finally someone has written a gay novel that's big, fun, sexy AND intelligent. I was curious to see what Ford's fiction would be like, and I'm pleased to say that it's a lot like his nonfiction. He combines spot-on humor with an insight into what it means to be gay that is unmatched in contemporary fiction. Best of all, these are characters that almost all of us can relate to. They aren't gym queens and circuit boys--they're real people dealing with real situations. This is the book I've been waiting for since finishing Armistead Maupin's TALES OF THEY CITY series.

...Last Summer
Published in Paperback by PageFree Publishing (September, 2002)
Average review score:

A bumpy train toward maturityMr. Welch captures the nostalgia of family values in America in the 1950's with this very readable short novel. He combines isolated places on railroad sidings in the American west with the by-gone era of the Railroad to create a unique setting. The problems surrounding a young boy growing through the emotional upheavals associated with sibling rivalry, family secrets, school days flirtations and even death are familiar themes explored in the book. In Mr. Welch's story a young boy wonders if an older sister who died before he was born is as lonesome in her grave as he is in the process of growing up. The reader might wonder if the children of today experience these age-old human emotions the same as children experienced them two generations ago. It's a tender story. The unusual setting gives it a twist worth reading.
...Last SummerThis is a very heartwarming story of a boy in New Mexico who
moves from one railroad town to another during the summer. His
father works for the railroad and this book follows their journey while Johnny and his family travel from one railroad town to another. This story takes place in the 1950's and shows the trials and tribulations that young boys go through on their way to manhood. The boys make their own entertainment using their
imagination as they play in the wide open countryside. I loved
this story and didn't want it to end. I liked the way the family
interacted with each other. They were a typical family in an untypical atmosphere. A very good read for young and old alike.

Little Book of Healing

Little Book of HealingI have read this book and continue to take it with me daily. Usually when I need an answer or just need some guidance the book has been able to provide it. No matter how often I go back to it there always seems to be something new.
September 11September 11, World Trade Center, anthrax, air crashes; our bodies and minds are injured and our fears inflamed.Whenever events and terrifying conditions such as those have occurred throughout history, there has always been a timely and unexpected gift. This is what David Summers offers in his just released "Little Book of Healing". David writes, "Courage does not overcome fear, it simply gives the strength to march with it"
I recommend highly this book of healing and wisdom.

Lovin Touch Iii.

Beautifully written.......it really touched my soulThis book is so beautiful. It wqas insperational thank yo
A collection of soothingly intimate love poems. In Lovin Touch Iii, poet Dick Summer gives us glimpses into one of those once-in-a-lifetime relationships with all its ups and downs and many of its joys. (An even better volume, however, is Summer's Lovin Touch V, with poems that tell about being "On the Prowl" and what would happen "If It Weren't For Dreams.") I remember listening to Summer, a former disc jockey for WNBC in New York, read his poems on the air and sharing Lovin Touch Sensitivity Tune-ups. I am glad to know the love so freely and joyously expressed in Summer's Lovin Touches lives on.

The Moons of Summer
Published in Paperback by Leisure Books (May, 1995)
Average review score:

Thoroughly CreepyEveryone has a stereotypeblonds are dumb, cops are doughnut-eating jerks, housewives are boring, morticians are weirdos. Well, the mortician in this book really fits the bill. Business is slow. So what does he do? He starts killing off people. The local police cannot explain the sudden rash of deaths, but burnt-out cop turned journalist Guy Driscoll is a little more tenacious. He must prove to the police that Vernon Diest is responsible for the killings before he and his daughter are the next victims. Thoroughly entertaining.
The Moons of Summer is a smooth non-stop read thriller!S. K. Epperson employs the most natural and "its really happening" writing style I've read in a long time. The setting and characters in The Moons of Summer are focused: rivetting your attention. This mortician serial killing and cop blaming could really happen in any small town....in MY TOWN! Don't let the price fool you. The Moons of Summers IS a BEST READ book.

Mr. Summer's Story
Published in Hardcover by Knopf (March, 1993)
Average review score:

The most enjoyable book I've ever read.My latest out of print Suskind book finally arived today and I tore through the packaging which I let fall to the floor and I sat down and would not get up until it was finished. I had to stop every couple pages and pound the table and laugh and shake my head. When I got about halfway through, I had to get up and walk around and compose myself before continuing. I was walking around wiping my tears of joy and wondering why there aren't more people going insane over Suskind like me. I had just gladly spent 60 bucks on this out of print book. As soon as I save up more I'm going to fork over 200 more to get The Double Bass to finish my collection of his literary efforts. I wonder why everyone just stops with Perfume, they seem to like that one enough.
I'm still young and there's a lot more books beyond Suskind to be read. Maybe he won't seem so brilliant after I've more, but for now, man he's good. I've never laughed so hard at reading anything in my life as the piano lesson part of Mr. Summer's Story. This book is so beautiful. I hope Patrick Suskind continues to publish more in the future that will blow more people's minds and influence publishers to reprint these wonderful books.

Great! This is one brilliant book. I've read it in a library about four years ago, and I still a lot of it. Read it, you'll love it. Also read The Double Bass

The Natural History of Medicinal Plants
Published in Hardcover by Timber Pr (October, 2000)
Average review score:

I found a goldmine with this little bookHaving an interest in the subject of medicinal plants, I have been looking for book that explained more about what compounds are in plants and how they affect not only people but nature as a whole. I was intrigued by the concept that plants produce these compounds as defense mechanisms for their own survival, and it is these same compounds that act as medicines (or poisons) when used by people. It also inadvertently explains plant companions for successful gardening. For instance, when Purple Sage leaves are crushed, they release a compound to nearby tomato plants to release their own insect inhibiting compounds. What a great book!
A fascinating & informative history of plant-based medicineBefore discoveries were made in the labs, plant medicines accounted for most of the substances used to cure disease. Natural History of Medicinal Plants provides a fascinating and informative science history of plant-base medicine, how people have learned the applications of such medicine, and why plants developed curative properties. Chapters will prove of use to both those involved in health professions and botanists alike.

Night Connections
Published in Audio CD by Dick Summer Communications (01 May, 2003)
Average review score:

a must listen...After finishing listening to Dick Summer's "Night Connections" I could not help wonder why this was so good. What is it that this guy has that allows him to convey our inner strengths, weaknessess, our trumphs and our foibles. For one, Dick Summer "gets it." He is a master of detail. Nothing goes unnoticed nor untold. He does not spare us any of the details of who we are, and what we may think. The funny thing is that not just anyone can masterfully "truthspeak" like Dick Summer does in "Night Connections". He says what most of us have thought, but may only have whispered to ourselves. As a long time fan of his, I must say that even if you are not, you should certainly do yourself the favor of getting "Night Connections" and hear for yourself, what you might have been thinking!
Some of you will understand this, it certainly is "mouth verses ear"!!

Dick Summer... Master StorytellerDick Summer is a master storyteller and a keen observer of the human condition. "Night Connections" is a collection of vignettes about love: both good and bad. We've all been there... or perhaps just wanted to be there. The greatest moments of our lives; the times we'd just as soon forget; the encounters we only dream about. "Night Connections" captures them all in storylines that tug at our heart strings one moment... then bring a smile to our face the next.
Whether or not you've experienced the individual scenarios, you can certainly identify with them. "Night Connections" is a great escape for anyone who's ever been in love, regardless of the outcome.
